THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF SOLAR

A useful roof.
A considered next step.

Panels turn available sunlight into electricity. The value comes from matching that generation to your building, your usage and your connection.

01

Look beyond roof area

Shade, access, structural condition and space for safe maintenance all matter.

02

Understand when you use power

Daytime appliances and working hours affect how much generation you can use directly.

03

Be clear about the configuration

Grid-connected solar and backup serve different needs. Batteries and suitable equipment may be needed for outages.

These estimates are illustrative. Actual results depend on roof conditions, system design, electricity usage, tariffs and applicable rules.

How this estimate is calculated

Generation = system size × daily AC yield × billing days. Estimated consumption = (monthly bill − fixed charges) ÷ variable tariff. Direct use is the lower of consumption and generation × the direct-use percentage. Avoided purchases = direct use × tariff. The remaining bill is the original bill minus avoided purchases; surplus × export value is shown separately.

All defaults are illustrative. This simplified model does not use site-specific weather, hourly loads, tariff slabs, taxes, seasonal changes, battery losses or credit settlement rules. It is not a system recommendation, quotation or payback forecast. Daily yield already represents output after system losses. For detailed generation modelling, see NLR’s PVWatts documentation. This calculator does not call or reproduce PVWatts.

A solar proposal should help you make a decision. Use these questions in your conversation with Ferguson Solar.

Let’s discuss your requirements
01

The fit

How does the proposed size match my roof and electricity usage?

02

The equipment

Which panels, inverter and mounting structure are included?

03

The scope

What does the price cover, and what needs separate approval or payment?

04

The aftercare

What maintenance, warranty documents and support are included?

03 / THE WAY FORWARD

From first question
to a considered plan.

A simple outline for the conversation.
The actual steps depend on your site and agreed scope.

  1. 01

    Share your requirements

Tell us about your property, locality, electricity bill and what you want solar to do.

  2. 02

    Review the conditions

Consider roof area, shade, structural conditions and how electricity is used.

  3. 03

    Discuss a proposal

Review the suggested design, equipment, costs, exclusions and metering requirements.

  4. 04

    Confirm the next steps

Agree the installation scope, responsibilities and schedule before proceeding.

Practical answers to common rooftop solar questions.

Ask us a question
01What affects the cost of rooftop solar?+

System capacity, panels, inverter, mounting structure, cable lengths, electrical protection, roof access and the work included all affect cost. Ask for an itemised proposal with taxes, exclusions and payment terms. A bill alone is not enough for a firm quotation.

02How much roof space will I need?+

Usable area matters more than total roof area. Shade, water tanks, setbacks, access paths, panel dimensions and tilt all influence the layout. The calculator lets you try an illustrative area allowance; a roof layout and structural review are needed before capacity is confirmed.

03How is the right system size decided?+

Start with electricity consumption in kWh across several months, daytime usage and available roof space. The sanctioned load, connection type and applicable rules also matter. A larger system is not automatically a better fit.

04How much could my electricity bill reduce?+

Savings depend on how much solar electricity you use, what you pay for grid units and how exports are treated. Fixed charges and other bill components may remain. The calculator separates generation from direct use and gives no value to exports by default.

05Will solar work during a power cut?+

Ordinary grid-connected solar systems generally shut down during a grid outage for safety. Backup requires a suitable inverter, storage where needed, and a correctly designed isolated backup circuit. Discuss the appliances and backup duration you need before selecting a configuration. Read the technical background.

06What is net metering?+

Net metering measures electricity imported from and exported to the grid. The treatment of exports, eligibility, capacity limits and billing depend on the applicable utility and regulatory rules. Confirm current requirements for your connection; approval and a particular credit rate are not guaranteed.

07What maintenance does solar need?+

Panels may need cleaning appropriate to local dust and weather, along with checks of mounting, wiring, protection and inverter performance. Follow equipment guidance and use trained personnel for roof or electrical work. Confirm the maintenance scope and costs in the proposal.

08How do I request a proposal?+

Use the enquiry form with your locality, property type and an optional monthly bill. Explain any roof constraints or backup needs. Service availability and the next steps can then be discussed. Do not send identity documents or payment details through this form.

your roof could do.
